Texas Southern University graduate and Tiger great, Winston Hill, will have his National Football League (NFL) New York Jets jersey retired during halftime ceremonies this Sunday, November 1, at 1:00 pm of the Jets and Dolphins match up.
Winston Hill graduated from Texas Southern in 1962 with a bachelor’s degree in Health and Physical Education. He played offense and defense for the legendary coach Alexander Durley’s storied 1959 – 1963 football teams. He was drafted by the Baltimore Colts in 1963, but signed as a free agent with New York’s American Football League franchise that same year they became the New York Jets, and went on to record the tenth-longest string of starts in pro football history at 174.
As left tackle for the Jets he spent his career protecting Joe Namath's blind side and opening holes for the likes of Emerson Boozer, Matt Snell, and John Riggins. He was an American Football League All-Star in 1964, 1967, 1968 and 1969, and a Pro Bowl selection in 1970, 1971, 1972 and 1973.
According to his sister Dr. Rhonda Saldivar, a professor of English here at Texas Southern, “He’s a quiet man and a very humble individual. He is very excited about the NFL naming November 1st Winston Hill Day.” “We are very proud of him.”
