Employee Awareness and Training

Employee Awareness and Training includes a variety of methods, materials and tools to promote compliance awareness throughout the University. Initial compliance education consists of New Employee Orientation followed by a series of general and specialized compliance trainings. The general compliance trainings are typically open to all employees while the specialized trainings are designed for employees working within a function identified as having significant risk. Additional training may be required by a select group of employees as updates occur in applicable laws, regulations, policies and/or procedures. Both internal and external sources will be utilized to facilitate training.

ENROLLMENT AND LOCATION

Training classes are administered at Texas Southern University on various dates throughout the fiscal year. Specific class dates, times and locations are provided at the beginning of each month through campus e-mail. Employees are encouraged to pre-enroll in classes by contacting the appropriate department and or facilitator of the scheduled class. Tentatively, classes are administered in one of the following locations:

1.      School of Education, Room 318

2.      General Services Building, Room 217

3.      Recreation Center, Room 212

ATTENDANCE

Employees are required to pre-enroll in desired trainings to facilitate the coordination of class materials and room accommodations. Confirmations will be provided to employees upon enrollment and class attendance will be monitored through the Office of Human Resources.

Mandatory Training

Some training may be mandatory for particular positions or may require attendance and participation by all University employees. Mandatory training includes:

  • New Hire Orientation
  • Sexual Harassment
  • Retaliation
  • Diversity
  • Fraud
  • HIPAA
  • Workplace Violence
  • Ethics

Additional training may be required for supervisors or managers.  In addition to the mandatory training listed above for all University employees, mandatory supervisory/managerial training includes:

  • Positive Approach to Discipline
  • Understanding Leave Benefits
  • Comp Time v. Overtime
  • Avoiding the Pitfalls of Employment Discrimination
  • Conflict Resolution
  • Performance Appraisals Training
  • Procurement/Travel Services

New Employee Orientation

 The New Employee Compliance Orientation is administered monthly in conjunction with the New Hire Orientation facilitated by the Office of Human Resources. General compliance-related topics are discussed during the morning sessions of the orientation. Topics presented by the Compliance Office at New Hire Orientation include:
  • An Overview of Institutional Compliance and Compliance Components;
  • University’s Code of Conduct (TSU Ethics Policy).
 General and Specialized Compliance Training

The Compliance Office facilitates the following training opportunities:

  • Procurement Card Training;
  • Time & Effort Reporting Workshop; and
  • Grants Management
